Smoothie Battle: Tahini-Date or Carrot-Mango-Ginger?

Smoothie Battle: Tahini-Date or Carrot-Mango-Ginger?

Smoothies are an exceptional way to pack a ton of nutrition into a quick, yummy package. I turn to them frequently on less-than-stellar-eating days to amp up my nutrient count in a late-afternoon snack, or to bolster my kids’ meals when all they want to eat off their plates is the starchy, beige carbohydrate. They’re also a great way to get the probiotics into the whole family.

Here, I’m offering you two of my recent favourite immune boosting smoothie blends. The first is a creamy, protein-rich Tahini-Date Smoothie that tastes just like a milkshake. Tahini adds protein, calcium, and heart-healthy phytosterols and is a welcome departure from the old almond or peanut butter standbys. The banana offers prebiotic fibre that feeds the healthy bacteria contained the Bio-K, and the cinnamon brings warmth as well as antioxidants. It’s comfort in a glass, a near-dessert that you can feel good about.

The second is a Carrot-Mango-Ginger Smoothie, a vibrant orange, vitamin-loaded power beverage. Mango and carrots both pack a vitamin A wallop, and turmeric is lauded for its anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger, too, may have anti-inflammatory benefits, as well as being a stomach-soother - a good breakfast add-in for those who feel a bit queasy and not very hungry in the early hours. The result is a refreshing smoothie that feels clean and light - sometimes I prefer that over a creamy option.

What’s your choice? Which glass would you reach for?

    Tahini-Date Smoothie Recipe

    1 container of original Bio-K

¾ cup milk of choice (dairy or non-dairy)

    1 frozen banana, halved

    1 tbsp tahini

    2 dates

    ¼ tsp pure vanilla extract

    ⅛ tsp ground cinnamon

Combine all ingredients in blender container in the order listed. Blend on high speed for 45-60 seconds until completely smooth. Yields about 2 cups (500 mL), serving 1 or 2.

Carrot, Ginger, Mango & Turmeric Smoothie Recipe

    1 container of original Bio-K

¾ cup coconut water or apple juice

1 cup fresh or frozen cubed mango

    1 medium peeled, chopped carrot

1 tsp peeled and finely chopped fresh ginger

    ⅛ tsp ground turmeric

    1-2 tsp honey, as desired

Combine all ingredients except honey  in blender container in the order listed. Blend on high speed for 45-60 seconds until completely smooth. Taste and blend in honey if you feel it needs more sweetness (it will depend on the ripeness of the mango and sweetness of the carrot). Yields about 2 cups (500 mL), serving 1 or 2.
